When you fill up your car with petrol is the pump supposed to stop pumping if your tank is full?

It it does then i just found out today as it was the first time i have got a full tank of petrol..lol

The pump stopped working and it started clicking and i thought something was wrong….is there some sort of sensor, or was there indeed something wrong with the pump..?
I feel like a dummy…only been driving 2 years and never got a full tank:D

oh dear. yes it does stop. something to do with the air pressure.
it stops you spilling fuel all over the garrage.
    this one made me laugh.

Of course there is a sensor in the handle. If there wasn’t, people would be over filling their tanks millions of times a day.

Don’t know how it works ,I just know that when your filled the pump will stop.

Yep, that’s the way it works.

Next time you are at the petrol station take a quick look at the end of the pump nozzle, as well as the big hole that the petrol is obviously pumped out through there is a second smaller hole. When the petrol you are pumping into the tank gets close to the top of the tank and reaches the tip of the nozzle it covers over this second smaller hole which activates a vacuum cut out switch and that is what stops the pump from pumping anymore petrol.

There is a pressure differential valve built into the handle that senses when the tank is full and shuts the handle valve off. It does not stop the pump – it stops the fuel flow.
And be advised that they don’t always work. never leave your vehicle while it is being refuelled.
