What would happen if you were pumping gas into your car, forgot about putting the pump back and drive away and the pump broke off? Would gas start spraying everywhere? Would you have to pay for the damages? How much would that cost? Have you ever seen this happen to someone?

Totally, this happens quite often believe it or not. Same with driving away with your purse or coffee sitting on top of the car. Or locking your carkeys in. People just get distracted.

The gas would shut off right away. There are cameras everywhere in those places. So even if you managed to drive away, they’d still find you. The other people in the gas station would start yelling at you. Or you’d lose your gas cap too. Any damage would be handled by your insurance company. Hopefully everyone will get a big laugh out of it with no major damage.

Most modern gas stations are equipped with “break away” connectors on the hose. When too much pressure is applied, such as a car driving away with the hose in the filler, the connector breaks and no gas can flow.

The station may charge you for the repair, but the cost is not all that much. Some stations even keep extra connector in stock, seeing as they have this happen several times a month.

If you do do this, stop and return the hose to the station. Talk to the manager and see what they will charge you. If you keep going with the nose and nozzle, the station is more likely to file a police report and press the issue, The nozzle and hose are much more expensive that the break away connector.
