what happens if you drive off with the gas pump in your car and break it?

Just curious what if somebody forgot the pump in their car and drove off and the hose pulled loose and fell on the ground. I saw this happen at the pump today and wondering if that person is going to be in trouble? Somebody said they can just screw it back on but she gave them her license plate and number. Anybody hear of this happening and what happened to the person that did it?

the dj on the radio station i listen to had this happen to her. she gave them all her info and told them she’d pay for it, but they never contacted her after that (that she said at least). i’m sure it happens a lot. they have insurance so it’s probably covered

The hoses on the pumps have a device to handle this kind of accident. It is commonly called a ‘break-away’.

If you examine the hoses next time you are at a service station, you will notice a metal coupler. If you look closely, they usually even have their calibrated separation force printed on them. It is commonly 350 pounds. That is, it takes a pull of 350 lbs. to get the coupler to come apart.

I suspect not much would happen to anyone who made that mistake. I am sure the station would want to recover the pump nozzle and such, but going after someone for a mistake doesn’t make a lot of sense.

in new jersey it is not legal to fuel your car the attendant has to do it.. it seems that the attendant forgot to put the hose back or the people were not going to pay for the gas. any how if a attendant fueled your car and you paid and he did not take te hose out its the stations fault but if you fueled the car and did that you are responsible.. also that would do a lot of damage to the fuel door and the fuel tank pipe ok.

You sure would have a BIG vehicle if you drove off with a GAS PUMP in your car!! You could have the GAS NOZZLE in your filling outlet… but if you pump your own gas; that would be alittle difficult to do. How are you going to put on your GAS CAP?? I’ve never seen a gas station attendant FORGET to put back the hose / nozzle on the pump after pumping gas!! And I don’t think they’ve came up with SELF-PUMPING stations YET!!
