It won’t start… obvious answer
less obvious – they will start making a humming noise when they’re going bad, almost like the whir of a refrigerator, and usually some power loss when stepping on the gas is associated with pumps going bad.

If they are in the same place , it really doesn’t matter which one is bad as they should come as a unit . What kind of vehicle is this ? year – make – model ? Think what is confusing you is the “sock” or “strainer” in the tank . You should have a fuel filter somewhere in the line . Always change the filter first as No 1 it is the cheapest and No 2 the easiest to get to

the easiest way of finding out is to test your fuel pressure, most autozones rent gauges. usually the adaptor for the gauge is on your fuel rail under the hood, it usually looks like a bike tire air stem with a screw on cap. hook up the gauge and turn on the ignition, record pressure and compare with normal values.
